Our Story

A Love Letter to Charleston

Crafted in Charleston

Old-world Skill. New-world ease.

At Laurel, A Collective, our story begins with a reverence for Charleston — its architecture, its artistry, and its unmistakable sense of place. Designed to complement the historic fabric of Cannonborough-Elliotborough, this community blends timeless detail with modern living. The result is a residence that feels both rooted and forward-looking, honoring the past while creating space for what’s next.

A high-action shot of a male blacksmith at work in a dark, industrial forge. The man, with blonde hair and a tattoo on his right shoulder, wears a heavy yellow protective apron over a black tank top and safety glasses. He is leaning over a large black anvil, holding a glowing orange-hot metal piece with tongs while preparing to strike it with a heavy blacksmithing hammer. In the soft-focus background, another worker is visible near a roaring orange fire from a furnace, and various metal-working tools hang on a white cinderblock wall. The lighting is dramatic, highlighting the sparks, the heat of the metal, and the intense physical effort of the craft.

HANDCRAFTING HERITAGE WITH THE ACBA

Among the many details that make Laurel, A Collective distinctive, our collaboration with the American College of Building Arts is one we hold especially close to our hearts. Many of the exterior elements that define the Reserve on King Street have been hand-sculpted, carved, and forged by students and master artisans using time-honored techniques. These handcrafted details are more than ornamentation — they are lasting works of art that will become part of Charleston’s architectural fabric for generations to come.

Through this partnership, we’re proud to support the next generation of craftspeople while honoring the city’s rich tradition of preservation and design. The result is a community rooted in authenticity, artistry, and a deep respect for place.

A close-up side profile of a female artisan working in a stone carving studio. She is wearing a yellow tie-dye tank top, cream-colored denim overalls, a baseball cap, and clear safety glasses. She is leaning over a wooden workbench, using a fine metal chisel and a wooden mallet to carve an intricate, symmetrical floral rosette into a square block of light grey stone. On the bench beside her work rests a natural sea sponge and another larger, curved piece of unfinished stone. In the soft-focus background, a massive, ornate classical stone face with a large mustache and swirling architectural details is visible, highlighting the scale and craftsmanship of the workshop environment.

The Significance of Oak Park

Serving as the primary entrance from Laurel into the vibrant Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood, Oak Park is anchored by a magnificent 100+ year-old live oak. Originally located at the center of the site, this 37-inch grand oak was carefully relocated during groundbreaking to preserve its legacy and create the welcoming green space residents will soon enjoy. Weighing more than 400,000 pounds with its root system, the tree’s move was a remarkable effort — and a reflection of our commitment to honoring Charleston’s natural beauty and history.

To the left, the architecture features classic cream-colored siding and blue-grey shutters, while the right side showcases the grand stone facade with a massive signature arched entryway. In the center, a large, mature tree is beautifully uplighted, anchored in a lush landscape of flowers and red maples, all connected by clean brick walkways that define the upscale atmosphere of The Laurel.
